Description

Pipettes are used to transfer small volumes of liquid. We have several sizes of pipette: P2, P10, P20, P200, and P1000.

Before using pipettes for experiments, make sure you complete the Pipette Practice Worksheet!

Just a few reminders when pipetting:

  • Always check and adjust your volume before you start pipetting.
  • If you touch your tip to something that is not sterile, replace the tip.
  • Depress down to the first stop, then place your tip into the liquid. Allow the plunger to come all the way up. Look at the tip to make sure the volume you've sucked up looks right, and there are no air holes.
  • When releasing, press the plunger all the way down to the second stop, pull out of your liquid, then release the plunger (this will prevent you from sucking small volumes back up).
  • Hold the pipette as vertically as possible. This will help prevent you from sucking up air bubbles.

[Insert image of equipment here. To do this, take a picture of the reagent on the shelf, save it on to the shared computer 'mccormicklab1>Wiki-Documents and Figures> Pictures for WIki with a file name of “nameofequipment-image.png” . Select “Add images and other files” from above and upload your image. When the Link Settings tab pops up, select “Direct link to original”, “Align the image on the right” and “Medium Version”, then click insert. You may have to mess with the size and position. Please ensure that all images are facing the correct direction. ]

Location: On the benchtops, in the center

Notes and Warning: The pipettes themselves are not sterile. When transferring liquid, make sure not to place the pipette inside the container, as you may cause contamination.
