Velveteen is utilized in the replica plating of yeast cells. The velveteen's texture allows the cells to be copied to a new plate exactly without morphing the appearance or location of a colony.
Velveteen sheets are cut into 6×6 inch squares and washed, dried and autoclaved before use. We recommend black or other dark shades of velveteen so that yeast cells are the most visible.
Notes and Warning: Always make sure that you use velvets that have been autoclaved. You will know that they have been autoclaved if they are in a pouch (as seen above) that has autoclave tape that has turned black.
Equipment maintenance: When done using a velvet, clean thuroughly with water. Dislodge cells by rubbing the fabric together. DO NOT EVER USE SOAP! Soap is surprisingly difficult to wash off and can kill cells when the velvets are used later. Hang to dry before autoclaving in a foil pouch.
