Description

Glass Hockey Stick or Cell Spreaders are used in order to spread cultures of yeast or bacteria onto plates. They are used for seeding NGM plates with OP-50 and in transformations for spreading cells onto selective media. These hokey sticks are made by melting straight glass rods in two places to form the shape seen below.

This video shows how to make a cell spreader out of a long Pasteur Pipette. We do a similar process, just with a glass rod. https://www.benchfly.com/video/65/how-to-make-a-bacterial-spreader/

Location:Glass Rod: Drawer 19, Hokey Sticks: Below shelf O near worms scope

Notes and Warning: Do Not place hot or warm glass into cool liquids, this will cause the stick to crack and break. When making a new hokey stick, remember that glass stays hotter much longer than you think it will. Allow to cool completely before handling.

Equipment maintenance: Please dispose of and replace any hockey sticks that are broken or cracked.
